In Ho Chi Minh, Celebrate a Thriving Nightlife

When the sun goes down and the city lights illuminate the streets, the city of Ho Chi Minh (HCM) comes alive. Whether you’re looking for cheap booze, luxe rooftop bars, or trendy nightclubs, find all that and more in the city that never sleeps.

Rooftop Bars

From bright lights of the city skyline to sunsets along the Saigon River, rooftop bars in HCM offer some of the best views in the world.

Chill Sky Bar makes one of the most famous and established open rooftop bars in HCM, thanks to locals and expats who are looking for an upscale party experience. Guests can choose to kick back in the luxe indoor lounge which overlooks the outdoor bar area or head on out to the open-air deck where stunning views, neon lights, and live DJ sets await. Boasting award-winning craft cocktails, extravagant performances and themed events every night, this is a must-visit when in the city of HCM. Opens daily, Sun-Thurs, 5.30pm – 2am, Fri-Sat,  5.30pm – 4am, Rooftop 26th Floor, AB Tower, 76A Le Lai, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

For something more relaxed, Breeze Sky Bar on the fifth floor of the Hotel Majestic Saigon is the place for you. While the venue also serves as the hotel’s all-day dining restaurant since 1925, the al-fresco sitting area exudes a certain old-school charm (which we love). With the evening breeze, views of the picturesque Saigon River, and a drink in hand, the slow pace after a long day in the hectic city can be a welcomed respite, right? Opens daily, 24 hours, 1 Dong Khoi, Ben Nghe, Quan 1, Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam

#2 Nightclubs

For a taste of the city’s crazy party scene, one doesn’t have to look far in HCM. From the sophisticated to the infamous, there’s a good mix of venues for you to enjoy the night’s festivities.

A long-standing institution in HCM, Apocalypse Now is one of the well-known names in the city for a wild night out. Affectionately referred to as “Apo” by locals and expats alike, this two-storey nightclub draws crowds every night with cheap drinks, flashy themed nights and a wide range of music — pop, hip-hop, EDM and more. Opens daily, Mon-Sun, 7pm – 4am, 2B Thi Sach, Ben Nghe, Quan 1, Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam

If mingling with a sharply-dressed crowd in a luxe setting is more your thing, head over to Envy. More than just a nightclub, Envy aims to be a premier nightlife destination by combining sophisticated fittings, cutting-edge technology, and performances like aerial silk and fire-breathing acts, to provide a truly luxurious and unforgettable experience.

With frequent guest appearances by international DJs and staff that provide exceptional service, it’s no wonder this is one of Vietnam’s most popular playground long after the sun sets. Opens daily, Mon-Sun, 9.30pm – 3am, 74 – 76 Nam Ky Khoi Nghia St., District 1, Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam

#3 Bars

For a laid-back night, opt for one of HCM’s many bars — hole-in-the-wall establishments, live music pubs, specialised craft beer or cocktail bars — all of which allow you to have a conversation without having to shout over your friends.

Layla Eatery & Bar, an Australian and Vietnamese-run bar and kitchen opened in 2016, serves up an extensive menu of cocktails, wines, beers on tap, and other alcohol. With its modern and sleek interior, the space is reminiscent of those that can be found in downtown Melbourne.

With tapas, shared plates, and mains on the menu, the quality drinks and food go hand in hand. Along with its relaxed and comfortable vibe, you’ll find yourself relaxing here with a second glass long after dessert is finished. Opens daily, Mon-Thurs, 4pm – 1am; Fri-Sat, 4pm – 2am, Sun, 1pm – 1am, Second Floor, 63 Dong Du, Quan 1, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

As HCM’s first in-house craft beer brewery, East West Brewing Co. is not your typical bar. The ground floor houses the tap room, an open-concept restaurant on the second floor, and finally a rooftop deck. The ‘wow’ factor comes from the humongous brewing tanks that can be seen from the taproom all the way into the restaurant.

With at least eight different artisanal beers on tap plus seasonal specials, you’ll definitely be able to find a favourite (or two) here. Opens daily, Mon-Weds, 11am – 12am, Thurs-Sun, 11am – 1am, 181 – 185 Ly Tu Trong, Phuong Ben Thanh, Quan 1, Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam

#4 Pham Ngu Lao District

This list wouldn’t be complete without a nod towards the stomping ground of (most) backpackers visiting HCM. Comparable to the famous Khao San Road in Bangkok, Pham Ngu Lao is the place backpackers look to for cheap accommodation, food, shopping and nightlife.

While the area has no shortage of bars and clubs in the area, many come here for the street drinking scene. Known as Beer Hoi bars, these businesses are mostly mom-and-pops operations where you can find locals and foreigners sitting shoulder to shoulder drinking unbelievably cheap jugs of pale ale, while noshing on sides of grilled meat. You can find these “bars” almost anywhere as you walk down the streets; just look out for the distinctive plastic chairs and stools that spill out onto the streets.
