Singaporeans like to complain that there is nothing to do in Singapore, but eh! When was the last time you visited our key places of interest?
We don’t mean to brag or sound super action, but you must admit: Singapore is cooler than we give it credit for. We’re always rambling about travelling the world, but a lot of us are actually missing some of the world’s best attractions, right at home.
Here are our favourite award-winning local attractions (plus a discount code)!
Universal Studios Singapore (USS) may be the smallest Universal Studios in the world, but it still packs a punch. USS clinched the No.1 Amusement Park in Asia (TripAdvisor Traveller’s Choice Awards) for three years running (2014 to 2016), with close contenders that include Hong Kong Disneyland, Tokyo DisneySea and Disneyland, and Universal Studios Japan. In 2016, they also bagged the Best Theme Park title in the Travel Asia Weekly Readers Choice Awards.
For the ‘extra’ experience:
First conquer the rides when the sun’s up, and then revisit the theme park at night for their inaugural Halloween Horror Night (HHN) event in October. The HHN series has many accolades under its belt, and most recently in the 2017 Singapore Tourism Awards, HHN 6 (the 2016 edition) won Best Leisure Event and Best Marketing Idea.
‘Extra extra’ tip:
Celebrating your birthday at USS? Head to the guest services lobby and let them know! Who knows, you may just get a surprise gift!
Gardens by the Bay is evidence our Garden City moniker is not merely a name. Since its opening in 2009, the horticulture attraction has won numerous awards for its architecture, conservation structures, and the many species of plants it houses.
The cooled conservatories have been named World Building of the Year (World Architecture Festival 2012), and most recently, the International Garden Tourism Leader (Garden Tourism Awards 2017, by the Canadian Garden Council). In 2016, the Supertree Grove was named one of the Top 5 Landmarks in Singapore (TripAdvisor), and the park won Best Theme Attraction (TTG Travel Awards 2016).
But of course, when kiasu Singaporeans excel, it must be holistic. As it turns out, Gardens by the Bay is also recognised for providing world class customer service (ASA Excellent Service Award 2016, Gold & Silver Awards, by Association of Singapore Attractions (ASA)). That’s not all: They treat their staff well, too. In 2017, they came in tops for having the Best Work-Life Balance (<500 employees) in the HRM Awards 2017.
#3 Wildlife Reserves Parks: Singapore Zoo, Night Safari, and River Safari
These attractions need no introduction. But if the last time you visited these parks was during your primary school excursion, give yourself a smack on the head! You’d be surprised at how much these zoos have changed, and we’re sure you’ll be ooh-ing and ah-ing just like when you were young.
The Singapore Zoo is ranked #1 in TripAdvisors’ Travellers’ Choice Awards (Zoos and Aquariums, 2014 & 2015) and has won the Best Leisure Attraction Experience Award (Singapore Tourism Board) nine times in total! They are currently holding a pop-up reptile exhibition, Reptopia, which features all kinds of scaly animals. Selected food joints are also involved in the event, and offer cute turtle and other reptile themed snacks.
Also impressing us with their accolades is the Night Safari, the world’s first nocturnal wildlife park. The Night Safari is a 12-time winner of the Best Attraction (Singapore Tourism Board) in Singapore, and features a unique experience of a tram ride in the darkness.
With over 10,000 underwater animals, 800 different species, and 45 million litres of water, it’s no wonder S.E.A Aquarium is one of the world’s most impressive marine zoo! The aquarium received TripAdvisor’s Certificate of Excellence (2015), and was ranked among the Top 3 Aquariums in Asia (Traveller’s Choice Awards, TripAdvisor, 2015).
The S.E.A Aquarium is especially great for Singaporean visitors because it is a foodie heaven! A must-visit is the Ocean Restaurant by Cat Cora, which features not just delicious Californian-Mediterranean cuisine, but a wonderful view of the marine exhibits. There are tall glass panels in the restaurant so you can enjoy your meal “underwater”. The celebrity chef whips up light and healthy dishes, and top favourites include the Smoked Eel and 42°C Sous Vide Salmon.
