Preparing to travel can be stressful not only for you but your skin, too. This summer season (cue relaxing by the beach and cafe hopping), take a step further to show your skin some TLC before you embark on your sunny adventure. Plus, you do need that extra glow and shine to nail those summer outfits (and score points for the ‘gram!).
Here, a couple of homemade recipes that are not only cheap and easy to concoct, they’ve withstood the test of time as one of the most effective ways to get healthy, glowing skin quickly (proof: We tried these natural DIYs ourselves and saw significant results in just a few days):
Tighten skin and remove blackheads with egg white
One of our personal favourites, this simple method makes a quick solution to dispel dull skin.
What you need: Egg, fork, bowl
How to apply: Crack the egg and separate the white from the yolk. Use the white and beat it with a fork until it turns foamy. Apply on the face with your fingers and leave it on for at least 30 minutes. You’ll feel your face tighten almost immediately and that’s a good sign! As a last step, rinse off with clean water.
What it does: Cleanse and firm up the skin. You can feel the difference in just one session.
Reduce tired and puffy eyes with cucumber
The go-to remedy for tired eyes, especially after prolonged computer use.
What you need: Cucumber slices, water, juicer, cotton pads, zip lock bag, bowl
How to apply: Place cucumber slices on the juicer and add water (skip the water if you want a thicker concentrate). Transfer the solution into a clean bowl and soak the cotton pad. Press it down (gently) with four fingers and place it inside the zip lock bag. Repeat for the rest of the cotton pads. Toss the zip lock bag into the chiller. Once frozen, thaw it out for two minutes. Leave on the eyes for five minutes before bathing in the morning to reduce puffy eyes. Apply the remaining juice on the face to brighten skin (did you know: it could act as a natural toner too).
Pro tip: Stock up as many as you can (e.g five zip locks at once). They still work even after several months in the chiller!

Get clear skin with potato
We know how stubborn facial spots can be. Here’s one of the easiest ways to remove them naturally (without undergoing chemical treatments).
What you need: Slices of raw potato
How to apply: Cut a raw potato into slices (avoid cutting too thin). Rub them gently around all areas of the face and neck for 15 minutes once a day.
What it does: Remove dark, ageing spots gradually.
Go acne-free with Manuka honey
For the uninitiated, Manuka honey boasts tons of antioxidants and anti-bacterial properties. Apart from being a miracle ingredient to soothe a sore throat, it makes one of the best treatments to fight off acne – and brighten skin at the same time.
What you need: Manuka honey, tea tree oil
How to apply: Mix two tablespoons of each in a clean bowl. Apply a thick layer on the face and leave on for 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water as a last step.
What it does: Moisturise your dry skin and prevent acne.
Lighten scars and stretch marks with lemon
Lemon is packed with vitamin C, which aids your skin to become smooth (citrus acts as a natural exfoliator too) and glowing.
What you need: Lemon
How to apply: Cut the lemon and squeeze the juice into a bowl. Rub the juice on the targeted spots in circular motions. Leave on for 5 minutes and repeat the process thrice a week to see results.
What it does: Exfoliate, moisturise and reduce redness on the skin, among many others.
