5 Top (Yet Under the Radar) Family-Friendly Destinations in 2018

According to luxury tour operator Scott Dunn, here are the under-the-radar travel destinations to put on your 2018 travel bucket list. Time check: The first half of the year is coming to a close.

#1 Langkawi, Malaysia

holiday destinations

Pantai Cenang makes the busiest beach in the city thanks to its clear waters, white sands and availability of food joints and souvenir shops.

Summer getaways are the best, and our favourite way to spend it: on a tropical island surrounded by lush greenery and beautiful beaches. Just one hour away from Singapore, you can get all of that (and more) on this retreat spot. Boasting calm waters that are safe for swimming, families will appreciate the time spent in popular beaches like Pantai Cenang and Pantai Tengah. If you haven’t already heard, the much-anticipated five-star luxury hotel The Datai is re-opening in July 2018, after its 10-month-long S$79 million renovations, too.

#2 Sri Lanka

holiday destinations

Yala National Park is a must-see for those who are looking to spot leopards in their natural habitats.

Possibly a more peaceful alternative to Thailand and Vietnam, Sri Lanka makes a rather charming destination. From timeless ancient temples to scenic tea plantations, there’s plenty to see, feel and experience. We’d like to think that outdoor-loving families will heart the nature and wildlife (think beaches, train rides and national parks). For the more adventurous, check out activities like white water rafting and whale watching (the best spot for it is reportedly best this small local touristy town called Mirissa). Don’t miss out on Yala National Park, said to be the most celebrated wildlife establishment in the country — and in the world to spot leopards.

#3 Lapland, Finland

holiday destinations

The midnight sun happens when the sun is seen during midnight.

Here’s where you can bring your children to see the magic of Christmas (and snow) IRL — just like in the fairytales. See the roaming deer, vast snowy landscapes and not forgetting the magical Northern Lights. You also have to see the natural phenomenon that is the midnight sun which happens from May to July. In fact, the sun doesn’t set for several months in summer! Pro tip: Soak in the warm waters for a swim or sauna under the midnight sun, and rent a cottage this period to bask in the whole unforgettable experience.

#4 Jordan and Oman, Middle East

holiday destinations

Tent-style camping to sleep under the stars.

If going for camel rides and sand boarding with your family sounds appealing, taking a one-week trip to Jordan and Oman could be one of the best decisions you’d make. You might know Jordan as the home archaeological site of Petra, and here’s where you can explore the Roman ruins in its splendor. Then make your way to Oman. You can’t miss out on the majestic Wahima Sands, where your family can sleep in a desert camp under the twinkling stars.

#5 Dolomites, Italy

The breathtaking mountain range makes an ideal setting for families with young children to roam and play. The older children can opt to take advantage of the trip to try rock climbing, mountain biking and hiking — in nature! Tucked away in the idyllic surrounds, the family-run Rosa Alpina lodge is a must-stay for summer. While the children get happy with the wide range of activities, the adults will love the variety of restaurants and spa treatments here.
