Our favourite time of the year is finally here, and what better way to get those festive juices going than to party in a whimsical wonderland? This season, Sanrio Puroland—a cartoon theme park in Tokyo, Japan—gets decked out in colourful baubles and fairy lights to celebrate Christmas and usher in the new year. Talk about ending 2017 with a bang!
It’s a Puro Christmas!
Aside from the seasonal park decorations (they make for stunning #ootd back drops, by the way), the character mascots get dressed up for the occasion too! Hello Kitty, Cinnamoroll, and the rest of the Sanrio cast will be parading in their winter best for the evening illumination shows, and for the first time ever, park goers are encouraged to join in the singing and dancing. Lighting up the park in blue and white lights, the impressive light show is one of the biggest in Japan, and is definitely not to be missed.
The festive menu is almost too cute to eat!
You know what else gets a festive makeover? The food! We’re not surprised—Japan is, after all, the birthplace of Kyaraben, which are elaborate meals arranged and made in the likeness of popular cartoons. The Kitty Land food court, specifically, is offering an exclusive, limited edition Christmas menu. While there, make sure you try to Hello Kitty Santa Claus Curry. Have more of a sweet tooth? Grab the Pompompurin Christmas Cake.
Celebrating Shogatsu (the New Year) in true Japanese fashion
The Christmas festivities will run until the actual day itself (25 Dec), and from Boxing Day (26 Dec) the park will kick-start its first New Year event. Shogatsu is a traditional Japanese celebration of the New Year, and is one of the most important holidays for the locals as it symbolises new beginnings and a fresh start.
The theme is “Tori-bute to Woof-derful” which is a play on the phrase “Tribute to Wonderful”, referencing the outgoing year of the “tori” (rooster) and incoming year of the “woof” (dog). For this special occasion, the mascots will don beautiful and intricate kimonos. It is the only time where you can see them in the traditional Japanese outfit, so don’t miss it—especially the adorable dog-like characters like Pompompurin, Cinnamoroll, and Pochacco!
