5 Reasons to Visit Batam this Long Weekend

#1 Budget Shopping

The hottest shopping spot in Batam is undoubtedly Nagoya Hill Shopping Mall. There are lots of small stores selling designer knock-offs, but if you’re not into that kind of thing, there are affordable clothes, bags, and souvenir shops as well. There are also lots of food options, and a cinema within the mall (Cinema 21). You’ll also be pleased to know that Batam is a duty-free zone, which means low prices! For higher-end shopping, you can try Batam City Square and Mega Mall Shopping Center.

Living up to its resort reputation, Batam is home to many beauty and wellness centers that are ready to spoil you senseless! And for a reasonable price, too. Feel like a VIP at Majesty Spa & Massage or Spa Secret. While considered the more well-known and “atas” ones in Batam, the prices are still cheaper than Singapore, so it’s still worth a visit! If you’re on a tighter budget, just stroll the streets and you’ll be sure to find a cosier parlour.

#3 Awe-inspiring Temples

Hey, Batam is not just “eat, sleep, and shop”, okay? It’s also full of culture, and has many must-visit temples that will wow you with their stunning architecture and rich history. Don’t miss the Vihara Buddhi Bakti (also known as Tua Pek Kong Bio), which features a beautiful sacred garden behind the temple. Another one to add to your itinerary is the Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya. It is called the Laughing Buddha Temple, and is one of the largest Buddhist temples in Southeast Asia. Visit the Buddha statues in the main hall, and the Goddess of Mercy idols in the side chambers.

#4 Fresh Seafood Feasts

Fresh seafood is expensive fare in Singapore, but not in Batam! On the island, you can order your fill of prawns, crabs, squid, and more, and only at a fraction of the price. The popular restaurants include Rezeki Seafood Restaurant, which is by the seaside in Nongsa, and Restaurant Sei Enam Seafood Batam at Batam Center. Once you’re done, wash it down with some beer—it’s cheap here too!

#5 Sunset at the Barelang Bridges

Yet another top tourist attraction is the Barelang Bridges. This series of six connecting bridges get its name from the three islands it links—Batam, Rempang, and Galang. Overlooking the water, this is the perfect place to catch the sunset and soak in the spectacular seascape of Batam.
